Saving Energy Hints
With a family of seven, power consumption can be large. Over the last two years we have greatly reduced our power usage. While there are always the simple rules of turn everything off unless is being used, with a little investment one can save hundreds of dollars a year.
First, your hot water heater is an energy monster. We recently purchased a house with two old hot water heaters; yes two! After switching these with two new energy efficient electric water heaters we saved over 30 dollars a month. That’s $360 a year!
Next, we checked to see if our attic insulation was correct and found that it was not. After adding another four inches of insulation we now use less wood in the winter and our central air works much better and uses less energy. Also, installing an attic fan can greatly help.
And of course under great duress we swapped our light bulbs for the inferior but cheaper to use mercury bulbs. However, in some of our rooms we kept the standard 75 watt bulb because they are much friendlier to our eyes.
Lastly, we installed newer windows and use thick vinyl or roman shades to cover our windows when the sun is at its hottest. Planting trees also helps but it could take years before you get much shade.
With great pleasure I can say that we reduced our power bill by thirty kilowatt hours per day. Saving 90 dollars a month in this economy is an achievement we are proud of.
